Sara Annie, one of my favorite books is Richard Bach's, Illusions.
Mine too, obviously. I received it as a gift in college from a very dear friend. It changed my life and the way I thought about the nature of God and the human condition (my, how cliche, I just bored myself). Every time I read a post asserting some ridiculous absolute about the unknowable, I find myself thinking about the last entry in the Messiah's Handbook...
I always look forward to your posts so I can nod and say "Yeah, what he said!" after reading them. Thanks for that.

Why do I picture JamesThomas making a living doing something cool like building canoes or being a river guide and eating shrooms?
Or flying an old but immaculately kept plane around the countryside giving rides for three bucks each and laying out in a field staring at the sky making clouds disappear...

You haven't really said what problem your family has with your fiancee...is it that she is a JW, or is there something elsen going on here? She can't be too much of a hard-line JW if she's marrying outside the 'flock'...
If it is because she is a witness, is it possible that your family is reacting to your marriage out of fear that you will embrace her religion and they fear they'll lose you to the org? Is it possible they are reacting to the speed at which you've decided to marry?
As I do now know all the particulars, it's difficult to judge your family one way or the other. I'll just say this: One thing I've learned in my 32 years is that if your family dislikes something you're doing or someone you're involved with, AND (this is important) your family is generally good for you, loving, and non-destructive in nature, they is usually a good reason--and they are usually right.
I wish you luck in whatever road your life takes.

a personal question about *gasp* sex!
by missylissy in.
lol.
ok here goes.... how old were you your first time?

I was a virgin until 18, but it wasn't for lack of trying! I dated my high school boyfriend for four years, three of which I spent attempting to convince him we wouldn't both be immediately sentenced to hell for having sex. He kept to the high road, however, and we never did consummate our relationship. Funny, though, how he didn't mind receiving a healthy regular dose of oral sex....just wouldn't ever commit to doing the whole deed part-and-parcel. *sigh* We broke up our freshman year of college and my next boyfriend was more than willing to deflower me. Over and over and over....
My husband (who is 9 years my senior) lost his virginity at 15. I take great delight in telling him that when he was having sex in the back of his Pinto, I was a six year old with red curly pigtails. Makes him grimace every time.

I think anyone who puts that much thought into how to stop masturbating needs to start immediately.
Puh-leeze. Is there anything, and I mean ANYTHING as stupid as making such a gigantic deal out of something so insignificant as this? It hurts no one, it's not evil, it's not adverse to nature. Show of hands: Who here never masturbates? Another show of hands: Who here is a damn liar? The same group of people will have their hands in the air.
And anyone who posts saying "I've never done that!" protesteth just a little too much.

Why I Will No Longer Be Flying the "Friendly Skies"
by SanFranciscoJim inheightened security measures in the u.s. now demand the implementation very soon of a new program called "capps ii".
airline passengers will now be required to not only present photo identification at the airport ticket counter, they will now be required to also provide their date of birth.. airlines are being ordered by the so-called "homeland security" agency to determine if each passenger is a flight risk, rating them "green" (ok to fly), "yellow" (need to be interrogated before allowing access to the aircraft), or "red" (forbidden to fly under any circumstances).. while many see this as a necessary security measure in the shadow of the 9/11 disaster, others are screaming "foul" because they believe it is an invasion of their privacy.. once this plan is initiated, i will no longer patronize airlines, not because of the invasion of privacy factor, but because of the threat of datamining.
what is "datamining"?

I guess I just can't get overexcited about giving out information that is accessible to just about anyone with half a mind to find it. While I mourn the deterioration of fundamental freedoms, I also attempt to keep some perspective on the situation.
We would do well to remember that our constitution is an active document that can and MUST change with the times. As our world evolves, so it must too. The particulars can be strengthened and alterered and have been in the past. I imagine the outcry against constitutional alteration was just as strong prior to the abolition of slavery.
This level of paranoia reminds me of all the people who were publicly up in arms about the security of any and all of our freedom and personal information prior to January 1, 2000. I can still hear people speaking on TV shows about how they cleaned out their bank accounts and tearfully talking about how they sold their vacation homes because society was going to collapse in a matter of months. People stockpiled food and supplies over NOTHING. Hell, we're STILL trying to eat through some of the things my brother's father in law had in his 'Y2K bunker' (what was the man going to do with the hundreds of gigantic cans of various foods and the 20 pounds bags of rice and flour? Give them to all the relatives and try not to look too stupid, that's what).
I wish you luck and happiness with your air-travel boycott.

Excellent post, Tom!
As someone who enjoys irony it all it's forms, I am constantly astounded at the ability of JWs to read such drivel in their literature without the slightest awareness that they are looking in a mirror. I am even more surprised that there is a group of men in Brooklyn that can write this stuff with a straight face--I suppose they are certain that the intended audience is so incapable of critical thought that very few (if any) readers will get that little tickle in the back of their brain that says "Hey...wait a minute, that sounds familiar for some reason..."
I sometimes think that the ONLY way to expose WT 'logic' for what it is is to use comparisons like the above. I think I'll print this out for future reference. Thanks!

How did all the animals fit on Noah's Ark?
by hooberus in.
many skeptics assert that the bible must be wrong, because they claim that the ark could not possibly have carried all the different types of animals.

Question: How did all the animals fit on Noah's Ark?
Simple. The number of theoretical animals you can fit on an imaginary ancient boat is infinite. (Just ask all those angels sitting around on the head of that theoretical pin...)
